  • Keep hands clean. Soot on hands can further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork.
  • Clearly mark the area with caution signs and safety tape.
  • If area is safe, list vital contents for emergency restoration/priority service.
  • Be sure your staff wears proper personal protection equipment.
  • Place dry, colorfast towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery and carpet traffic areas.
  • Wash off both sides of leaves on indoor plants.
  • Change HVAC filters and tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers to stop particles of soot from getting in or out of the HVAC system.
  • Do not attempt to wash walls or painted surfaces without first contacting your SERVPRO Professional.
  • Do not attempt to shampoo carpet or upholstered furniture without first contacting your local SERVPRO Professional.

Did You Know Your Air Vents Can Affect Your Business?

5/26/2021 (Permalink)

Your HVAC unit has to do with cooling and heating your home and business. Maintenance for your HVAC system is essential if you want your unit to run correctly for a substantial amount of time. Cleaning your HVAC system also entails duct maintenance as well.

Cleaning the ducts and vents means that they will be cleaning separate elements in the HVAC unit. It is important to clean multiple areas in the unit because it is unknown what lurks in your ducts. So, when turning on the air conditioning unit, those who have allergies may react from the dust, dander, or mold in the unit.

There are many advantages of cleaning your ducts/ HVAC unit. One benefit is having a more efficient system which will result in lower utility bills. Another benefit is having a healthier living environment. Keeping up with the system will also keep up the longevity of the unit, just like a “tune-up” with a vehicle would improve its life span.

SERVPRO Is Here To Help When Floods Arrive!

5/26/2021 (Permalink)

There is always potential for flood damage no matter where you live. According to the American Red Cross floods cause more damage in the United States every year than any other weather-related disaster. The American Red Cross offers these flood safety tips:

-Stay away from floodwaters. If you come up on a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around and go another way. Six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off of your feet.

-If you approach a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are riding rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.

-Keep children out of the water. They are curious and often lack judgment about running water or contaminated water.

If a flood occurs and affects you, call SERVPRO.  Even minor floods have potential to cause major damage. We are faster to ANY size disaster. Let us help you get your life back in order.

SERVPRO Is Here To Help Before & After Fire Damage

5/26/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO is here to get you from loss to preloss condition

Just two days ago, a local family suffered a terrible fire. Luckily, the fire was only contained to the second story. However, there is still a lot of damage to the house. The SERVPRO team believes the fire began because of electrical problems. Electrical fires are responsible for an estimated 51,000 fires each year, nearly 500 deaths, more than 14,000 injuries and around 1.3 billion dollars in damages. Electrical distribution systems are the third leading cause of home structural fires. In this case, this family got very lucky.

Our SERVPRO team goes out and assesses the damage after the firemen have left. They walk through the house and take tons of pictures for our records. SERVPRO then removes all items in the damage area. Any items that they can save, they do. Then, they do repairs for all damaged areas. The SERVPRO team only has the most qualified technicians to help get the job done.

When Your Sump Pump Fails - SERVPRO Is Here 24/7 To Help

5/26/2021 (Permalink)

Last week SERVPRO got a phone call that two sump pumps had failed at a local university. It was in the basement of the building. When the sump pumps failed, the bathroom flooded with water. Shortly after, the elevator shaft was full of water. There was also water that had leaked into multiple rooms of the large university building's basement.

Fortunately, SERVPRO was there to save the say. Unfortunately, the damage was done. Water had been standing in several rooms and seeped into the walls long enough to make a severe impact. It only takes mold 48 to 72 hours to begin growth. By the time SERVPRO members arrived and could get to the inside of the walls, mold began to grow. Our team members cut all of the wall space out that was affected. They spent multiple days drying the area out. Even though the area had already been affected, it is SERVPRO's job to make it "Like it never even happened."

Ask The Experts: Which Tool Is Right For Me?

4/16/2021 (Permalink)

A fire extinguisher can be a life-saving tool when used correctly. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) recommends individuals are properly trained in order to use and maintain an extinguisher.

USFA says an extinguisher should only be used if:
• You have alerted other occupants and someone has called the fire department.
• The fire is small and contained to a single object, such as a wastebasket.
• You are safe from the toxic smoke produced by the fire.
• You have a means of escape identified and the fire is not between you and the fire escape route.
• Your instincts tell you that it is safe to use an extinguisher.

Classes of Fire Extinguishers:

  • Class A: Use on ordinary combustible materials, such as cloth, wood, rubber, paper, and many plastics.
  • Class B: Use on flammable liquids, such as grease, gasoline and oil.
  • Class C: Use on appliances, tools, or other equipment that is electrically energized or plugged in.
  • Class D: Use on flammable metals and are often specific for the type of metal in question. These are typically found only in factories working with these metals.
  • Class K: Use on vegetable oils, animal oils, or fats in cooking appliances. These are generally found in commercial kitchens, but are suitable for the residential market.

SERVPRO specializes in the cleanup and restoration of residential and commercial property after a fire, smoke or water damage event, as well as mold remediation. We can handle any size disaster!

Cold temperatures can take their toll on your home and property, it is important that you prepare your home for cold weather to limit risks and potential damages. There are many easy steps you can take to help in the attic of your home; weatherstrip & insulate the access door from your attic into your home,  seal around your chimney with metal flashing or a high-temperature sealant, seal around plumbing vents, seal any holes between the heated space and the attic and insulate any exposed water pipes. If water damage occurs in your home due to extreme weather or anything else, make sure to call SERVPRO.

Ask The Experts: The Do's and Do Not's of Flooding

4/7/2021 (Permalink)

When floods hit it can be scary and overwhelming. It is vital to make sure that you are ready with knowledge for what to do and not do should a flood occur:

Before the Flood:

  • Have a qualified professional elevate the furnace, water heater and electric panel if susceptible to flooding.
  • Install “check valves” in sewer traps to prevent flood water from backing up into the drains of your home or business.
  • Seal walls in basement with waterproofing compounds to help avoid seepage.

During the Flood:

  • Turn off utilities at the main switches or valves if instructed to do so.
  • Disconnect electrical appliances.
  • Do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water.
  • Do not walk through moving water. Even six inches of moving water can make you fall.

After the Flood:

  • Listen to news reports to learn if the community’s water supply is safe to drink.
  • Avoid floodwaters. Water may be contaminated by oil, gas or raw sewage.  Water may also be electrically charged.
  • Stay out of any building if it is surrounded by floodwaters.
  • Return home only when authorities indicate it is safe.

Make sure you call SERVPRO of West Ft Wayne too! We are faster to any flooding disaster and are here to help get you back to "Like it never even happened."

Storms in the age of technology

4/7/2021 (Permalink)

Technology is a vital tool in preparing for emergencies or disasters, as well as during or after to stay informed of the situation and in communication with others. From common technology you already use on a day-to-day basis to taking a few extra steps to prepare, the following will help you be ready in the event of an emergency or disaster.

Store Information Online

There are many places to store important information securely online. Services like Google Drive offer a free way to store different types of files, from a Word document to images of important documents. Ready.gov suggests saving an electronic version of insurance policies, identification documents, medical records, and information on your pets, if necessary.

Follow the News

Stay informed by following agencies such as FEMA, local news channels, and local government on Twitter for the most up-to-date information in a disaster situation. You can also alert first responders if a rescue is needed through Twitter.

Mark Yourself Safe

The American Red Cross offers a Safe & Well check-in site to list yourself as safe or find family and friends in situations where communication is difficult to establish.

Facebook also has a feature called Safety Check that is activated after natural disasters or a crisis. You will receive a notification from Facebook if you're located in the affected area at that time.

Get in Touch

Make sure your contact information is up-to-date in your phone and e-mail for communication with family, friends, business contacts, and others whom you may need to get in contact with before, during, or after a disaster.

Charge Up

Keep a portable charger in your car and home in case of an emergency. You may need to recharge this from time to time, but you can also buy solar-powered chargers as well.

Ask The Experts: My Sprinkler Burst; Now What?

3/10/2021 (Permalink)

In early summer, a sprinkler burst in a building on one of our local campuses. SERVPRO was more than happy to help our local university. There was standing water in the floor of the building when SERVPRO arrived on the scene. The sprinkler had dispensed water on the floors and the ceilings. When water damage is concerned, it is important to act relatively quick to ensure that the damage is contained. If the situation gets much worse, it can advance to more than just water damage.

Typically, if the water is extracted, properly dried out and restored, the area affected should be alright. The area needs to be dried out within 48 hours. However, 24 hours is ideal. It takes mold 24 to 48 hours to begin growing in the ideal conditions. Sometimes, if not dried properly, mold will start growing but not visible just yet. When the water eventually dries, it will begin to show spots on the walls.

Luckily, in this case at our local university, SERVPRO acted quickly. SERVPRO knows the risks of water damage worsening and are always on the scene as soon as possible. The water was dried and the job done efficiently. SERVPRO is always happy to help.

Ugh...the Soot!

3/10/2021 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of West Fort Wayne will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

We Are Here For You With Your HVAC/Duct Work Cleaning Needs!

3/9/2021 (Permalink)

Since the ventilation system is often the biggest culprit in poor indoor air quality, inspecting the ductwork should be a high priority. In most cases, the HVAC system has been operating for some time without much attention. Dirty ducts can circulate odors, contaminants such as mold and irritating dust throughout your building or home.

A routine part of a SERVPRO Franchise Professional’s service is inspecting the heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit (HVAC). Keeping the HVAC system and ductwork clean can potentially extend the life span of the equipment by allowing it to operate at peak condition, which may save you money.

Unlike the majority of duct cleaning services, your SERVPRO Franchise Professional uses a Portable Ventilation and Air Duct Cleaning System to examine ductwork and make a clean sweep, removing years of dust and grime.

SERVPRO Franchise Professionals will inspect your HVAC system and ductwork and make recommendations about the best way to address any indoor air quality concerns. This inspection can save you money and provide peace of mind on the health of your HVAC system and ductwork.

In some circumstances, such as after a fire, smoke or suspected mold growth, duct cleaning becomes an essential part of the cleanup process. In these cases, your SERVPRO Franchise Professional can often restore the HVAC system and ductwork to pre-damage condition.

Ask The Experts: What Happens After The Fire?

3/9/2021 (Permalink)

1/22/2019

Unfortunately, the end of summer welcomed some local fires. Due to the abundance of fires in our area, the SERVPRO team has been called to address some of the aftermath. This job is just one of many that the SERVPRO team has been called to assess the damages and help get the job done. The SERVPRO team wants to come into a residential home or business and make it look like, "it never even happened" by the time a job is completed. In this case, the fire attacked most of the family home.

After the SERVPRO team arrives to a job and evaluates the amount of harm done to the building, they start working promptly to prevent the situation from worsening. Immediately, after a fire, soot residue settles onto the furniture and the entire area of the property. If not treated in a prompt manner, acidic soot may appear. If there are areas in the house that have wood, it may require refinishing after a fire. This is why SERVPRO is always faster to any disaster!

Why SERVPRO? We are the content restoration specialists!

3/9/2021 (Permalink)

Fire damage, including smoke and soot, affects not only the structure of your house but also your belongings. SERVPRO understands your family’s furniture, clothing, keepsakes, and other belongings are the very things that make a house a home.

Contents Restoration

SERVPRO technicians specialize in restoring contents damaged by fire. Their expertise and “restore” versus “replace” mentality can help you save money while preserving precious keepsakes that can’t be replaced. They pretest your belongings to determine what items they can restore to pre-fire condition. They use several methods of cleaning your contents, including:

  • Dry Cleaning - Used for cleaning light residues or to pre-clean prior to wet cleaning.
  • Wet Cleaning - An effective cleaning method for removing moderate to heavy residues.
  • Spray and Wipe -Effective for items that can’t withstand wet cleaning.
  • Foam Cleaning - Used for upholstery fabrics that might shrink or bleed if wet cleaned.
  • Abrasive Cleaning - Involves agitation of the surface being cleaned.
  • Immersion Cleaning - Contents are dipped into a bath of the cleaning product.

Water Damage Claim? We are Here to Help!

3/4/2021 (Permalink)

It can be hard to plan for flooding and how it might affect your West Fort Wayne home. However, there are a few ways you can prepare in case an incident should occur. Knowing how to make a flood insurance claim is one way you can be ready to handle the damage, and there are a few steps you can take when the time comes to file.

1. Contact Your Agent

Once you and your family are safely out of your damaged home, it is a good idea to call your insurance agent right away. Let them know the details of the flooding, such as where it came from, how deep the standing water is and what you need to do in order to get your claim started. Your agent can advise you about whether you can file from your insurance app or if they need to send a claims adjuster out to evaluate the damage.

2. Take Photos

Documenting flood damage for your insurance claim can help you retain proof of what you file. However, it is important that you only take photos if you can do so safely. Remember to leave items as they are for the photos so your insurance company can help you estimate the cost of the damage before cleanup efforts begin.

3. Call in a Professional Restoration Company

Getting an opinion about what it will take to restore your home can help you create a viable recovery budget. Calling in a water damage and restoration company may be helpful, as they can advise you about any possible problems with structural issues or mold growth after a pipe burst or water line break causes deep standing water in your home.

Making an insurance claim after flooding affects your West Fort Wayne home can be stressful. However, when you know which steps to take, the process may go more smoothly.

Ways To Avoid Fire Damage

1/29/2021 (Permalink)

Nearly 31 percent of all fires happen in residential homes. Of those, approximately half of them start in the kitchen. To keep your home in West Ft. Wayne protected, below are six tips to avoid a kitchen fire and extensive fire damage.

1. Keep It Clean

When it comes to tips, the easiest one is to keep things clean. Regularly inspect and service appliances to ensure they function properly. This includes disposing of toaster crumbs and cleaning the oven and microwave. Particles left behind could potentially ignite.

2. Unplug Small Appliances

Along with being energy efficient, unplugging toasters, mixers and other small appliances is a good habit. If they are older models, the wiring could begin to fail. If left plugged in, it could overheat and cause a fire.

3. Install and Maintain a Smoke Detector

A smoke detector is the first line of defense in fire safety. One should be installed near the kitchen but not in it so cooking smoke or steam doesn’t set it off. Be sure to change the batteries every six months to ensure it can be counted on.

4. Eliminate Buildup

A grease fire can happen when too much of it is being used and splatters. If it does spill over and is forgotten, it still retains its flammable properties.

5. Stay Involved

Like driving, when it’s time to cook, focus on cooking. When preparing food, items on the stove or in the oven should never be left unattended. Food can quickly bubble over or begin to burn.

6. Keep Fabrics Away

While cooking, avoid wearing long sleeves, which could easily catch fire. Keep towels, oven mitts and any paper products away from burners. Even the best chef has likely forgotten to turn off a burner. In the even that happens, making it habit to keep flammable objects away will keep a fire at bay.
These simple tips are easy ways to ensure the kitchen remains a safe zone. Changing a few habits can help you avoid needing professional help with fire damage cleanup.

Ask The Experts: How do I Prepare My Business For Disaster?

1/28/2021 (Permalink)

Even the best-run small businesses face the risk that external factors beyond their control, like a natural disaster, could derail operations.

A recent joint survey conducted by Insureon and Manta revealed that approximately 60% of small business owners don’t have either a formal disaster recovery plan or business interruption insurance, both of which could help them bounce back if an unforeseen event like Hurricane Florence forces their business to temporarily close.

Natural disasters are unpredictable such as the recent wildfires in California are unpredictable. Out-of-control fires in Yosemite threatened the livelihood of small business owners in the hospitality industry, with one innkeeper estimating a loss of at least $20,000. Other local businesses, such as guided tour and day trip operators, faced the possibility of serious financial losses and the need to dip into savings to cover operating expenses.

While a disaster recovery plan won’t completely insulate small businesses from problems caused by Mother Nature, a well-thought-out strategy can help minimize the impact. In addition to purchasing commercial property insurance to help pay for repairs to damaged property, business owners should also consider buying a business interruption insurance policy. Not only can it help expedite recovery from a disaster, it can also minimize a business’ financial losses.

When a fire strikes your business, SERVPRO is here for you!

1/17/2021 (Permalink)

In the event of a business fire, fire damage is only one of several concerns you may have for protecting your business from further losses. Cleanup and restoration take time after a fire occurs. Keep your business safe during that process with the following three tips.

1. Avoid a Repeat Fire

When you discover a fire in your business you should turn to the local fire department to help you put it out. While your efforts may be good in stopping the fire from spreading, a fire crew can help you find the cause of the fire. Determining the cause is the best way to prevent further fire damage from occurring or reoccurring. If a small fire occurs, you may need to look for the cause yourself. Start by doing the following:

  • Unplug or turn off any electrical devices in the area
  • Turn off surrounding heat sources
  • Shut off gas supply to prevent the fire from spreading

2. Defend From the Elements

Once the fire has been completely put out and fire cleanup has begun, protecting your building from the outside elements is a critical step to avoiding further losses. In the fall and winter months, roof damage should be secured with a tarp to keep rain, hail and snow from permeating the structure. In warm months, tarping or boarding up openings can keep rodents and birds from nesting inside of the facility.

3. Secure the Facility

After a commercial fire in your business, you may be left susceptible to looting. Looters are individuals who take advantage of emergency situations, such as commercial fires and find weaknesses in the building's structure in order to get inside and steal valuable goods. If a business fire leaves your building with unsecured openings, you may need to hire a disaster response company to keep vandals and thieves from entering the premises.
As you face the fire damage restoration process, be sure to follow these tips to keep your business safe. Further damage and losses can be avoided if these basic procedures are observed.

SERVPRO Tips: Furnace Maintenance Tips & Tricks

7/1/2020 (Permalink)

Preventative fire cleaning on your home furnace is important to ensure it functions correctly and doesn’t cause fire damage. While many people suggest hiring a maintenance professional to inspect annually, there are some things you can do yourself as well to ensure your system runs efficiently.

Replace Filters Regularly

Dirt can be a big problem for heating and cooling systems, by lowering efficiency and burning extra fuel. Keep the system clean by vacuuming around the unit regularly and changing the filter monthly or whatever time-frame is recommended by the manufacturer.
Leaving old filters to sit for too long will add stress to the compressor and can eventually result in mechanical failures. Not only that, but the dirt and debris will also get recirculated through your home which can cause allergies and disease. It’s also important to do additional fire cleaning on heaters, radiators, and warm-air registers, while also ensuring they’re not blocked.

Maintenance Before Cold Weather

Many homeowners call a professional to do a yearly inspection and fire cleaning on their furnace before the heating season to confirm the system is clean and performing in the most efficient way possible. Here are a few steps you can take yourself to keep your bills low while staying warm:

Calibrate the thermostat. The correct calibration can be lost from excess dirt or being moved around. A furnace maintenance professional can check this annually, or you can replace it with a computerized one.
Clean and adjust the burners to improve efficiency, and check for any rust accumulation.
Reverse ceiling fans to a clockwise rotation to help push warm air down, especially if you have tall ceilings.
Seal any air leaks and all air ducts, especially in the attic or crawl spaces. Metal tape and insulation can temporarily save an aging duct system.

It’s good to get into the habit of allowing a professional to service your furnace once per year. Waiting until the end of the heating season (the off-season) may give you faster service at a slight discount. If you have endured some home damage due to a furnace issue, smoke cleaning and remediation services are available that can usually clean up the mess to almost as good as new.

If fire ever does strike your home or business though, give SERVPRO of West Ft. Wayne a call! We are faster to any disaster and will help get you back to "Like it never even happened."

SERVPRO Tips: You need an immediate response to water damage

6/25/2020 (Permalink)

When flooding and other water disasters affect your home and family, you don't want to wait several hours for regular business hours. You need solutions immediately. SERVPRO water damage mitigation professionals offer 24-hour emergency response services. This means that if a pipe bursts on a holiday, technicians are available to respond. If heavy storm damages leave your home exposed to flooding, a fast response could prevent further harm.

The first hours after your home is affected by water damage, many things begin to happen.

  • Furniture swells and breaks down.
  • Metal items tarnish and rust.
  • Fabric and paper items become stained.
  • Mold or mildew take hold.
  • Drywall weakens and swells.

An immediate response puts the progression of damage on hold while a corrective course of action is put into place.

Many situations requiring cleaning and restoration must be addressed immediately. This is because water damage takes place within minutes. Within a short 60-second period, walls, floors, and upholstery absorb water. Finishes on tables and chairs begin to bleed. Cherished photographs start to warp and discolor. If you have to wait more than a 24-hour period for professionals to arrive, the damage becomes much harder to address.

If you have to wait just two days for services, mold may begin to spread. Important framing may warp. Metal fixtures begin to corrode. Paint blisters and wood flooring swells. As damage increases, the efforts and cost of restoring your home increase rapidly. In some cases, the structural safety of your home could be affected.

SERVPRO is always open, so technicians are ready to respond within a single hour. Before four hours pass, professionals will be at your home. Within eight hours, a plan of action will be in place, and you will be well on your way to getting back on track. A fast response to flooding is crucial; take advantage of 24-hour availability for the protection of your home.

So give us a call! We are faster to any disaster and are ready to get you back to "Like it never even happened."

SERVPRO Tips: Where to get started when it comes to professional flood cleanup

5/7/2020 (Permalink)

After experiencing a commercial flood, you may feel overwhelmed by the amount of water and cleanup that is left behind. Whether you've taken a hit from a large storm or have experienced a pipe burst, the wait time given by a professional flood restoration company may vary based on the amount of affected properties in your area. The following damage tips will help you get a quick start on your cleanup efforts while you wait, and may prevent more serious damage from occurring.

1. Watch For Safety Hazards

When dealing with post-flood damage, safety should always be your primary concern. Never self-attempt flood cleanup if you believe any of the following may be true:

  • Electric currents may be in contact with sitting water
  • Mold or mildew have started forming in the affected area
  • Flood waters have been contaminated by sewage or chemical spills

2. Ventilate

Once you believe the flooded area is safe to enter, flood damage tips will tell you to start by ventilating the area. Open windows to allow fresh air to enter and consider using ceiling fans or industrial blowers to begin the drying-out process.

3. Toss Upholstered Furniture

A professional flood restoration team may be able to restore many of your commercial furnishings, but others aren't worth keeping. In general, furniture or draperies made of cloth and upholstery should be thrown out, unless they are machine washable by manufacturer standards.

4. Pull-Back Carpet and Padding

Once sitting water can be removed or dried up, most flood damage tips suggest pulling back carpeted flooring. This will allow padding and sub-flooring to dry completely and professionals can evaluate if it is salvageable upon arrival.

Professional Evaluation

Whether your commercial flood is minor or significant, be sure to have a professional come out and evaluate the full restoration needs of your facility. In the meantime, these cleaning tips should help you avoid further damage while your wait for sanitation and repairs.

SERVPRO Tips: Having a skilled team with experience makes all the difference in any situation

5/7/2020 (Permalink)

Regardless of how your kitchen fire started, smoke moves throughout the room and into other areas of the home. The smoke brings with it soot and harsh residues that can begin sticking to all surfaces. When you call our team at SERVPRO, we take the time to assess your cabinets, fixtures, appliances, lighting, and all other surfaces to initiate the best course for successful cleaning.

Patterns of smoke movement are always taken into consideration when we address your fire damage. Smoke not only drifts in an upward motion, but it gets drawn to cooler parts of your interior via conventional currents. The interiors of your kitchen cabinets and other concealed areas are prime spaces for residues to settle due to the cooler temperatures.

Once the restoration in your home begins, we're thorough and use cleaning agents developed by our in-house chemist that are specifically designed to clean smoke/soot residue.

For ceiling cleaning, our SERVPRO team looks at your lighting fixtures to address any soot that has settled before corrosion begins. We also take necessary precautions when checking wiring by testing outlets using electric circuit testers. All cleaning solutions go through a pre-test as well to ensure that the finish surrounding cabinets and fixtures are never damaged.

If the insulation within your walls has suffered smoke damage, we address it.

It would be best if you act fast to address the fire damage and the onset of smoke and soot throughout your home. Our team here at SERVPRO is here to help whenever you need us. So give us a call, we will send a team out promptly to make it “Like it never even happened.”

3/8/2020 (Permalink)

If winter and cold weather take their toll on your home, make sure to call the team with the knowledge and experience to make it “Like it never even happened.”

SERVPRO specializes in the cleanup and restoration of residential and commercial property after a fire, smoke or water damage event. We can handle any size disaster!

Winter Weather Woes? SERVPRO Can Help

1/30/2020 (Permalink)

A while back the entire midwest was hit with a massive cold front. This part of the United States didn't just feel the below freezing temperatures, but almost the entire area experienced a massive snow fall. Even areas in the southern part of the country experienced a large amount of snow. In Indiana we had a little snow and a polar vortex. However, SERVPRO received a great deal of frozen pipes and water loss.

In one job that we had, a water loss, occurred because of frozen pipes. This was a large commercial building with quite a bit of area affected. Typically, when pipes freeze, they warm up within a few days. When the warming process starts, the pipes begin to burst. After that, the building typically suffers a large water loss. There are ways to lower the chances of a burst pipes. However, the cold weather hit the area so quickly, most of the properties affected could not take preventative measures.

We proudly service the communities of:

Fort Wayne, Columbia City, Huntington, Decatur, Berne, and Portland

Soot & Smoke & Why You Should Call SERVPRO

6/30/2019 (Permalink)

Making Water Damage "Like it never even happened."

1/30/2019 (Permalink)

A few weeks ago, a local building suffered severe water damage. Members of SERVPRO have been at the local establishment everyday to dry out the affected areas. When a large amount of a building is damaged by water, the areas need to be assessed for the severity of impairment.

All areas need to be dried as best as possible. The other areas need to be addressed in other ways if the severity is high. For example, some areas of the wall may have to be cut out in order to prevent mold from growing. However, in this instance, SERVPRO is using specific tools in order to help quicken the drying process.

In the featured picture, are team is using a dehumidifier and a duct tube to help localize heat to the specific areas that need to be dried. This process will get rid of any water that remains in the walls or ceiling.

The Benefits of Cleaning your HVAC/ Ducts

1/22/2019 (Permalink)

Your HVAC unit has to do with cooling and heating your home.

Keeping up with the system will also keep up the longevity of the unit, just like a “tune up” with a vehicle would improve its life span.

Your local SERVPRO franchise is offering a HVAC/duct cleaning special. The special is for $450 per unit. If interested in the benefits of keeping up with your HVAC unit, contact your local franchise today.

Warehouse Fire

1/22/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO tackled the aftermath of a fire in a Louisville warehouse. Our local SERVPRO team traveled to help clean and repair the aftermath of a large fire. This fire left water damage along with soot everywhere inside the building. In this instance, the warehouse was heavily stocked with supplies. The SERVPRO team brought in a crew strictly for inventory management. There are many things that the SERVPRO team does well when it comes to the restoration business. One of the many things our team members try to take care of is the items that were in the property when disaster occurs. Our team logs every item they feel that can be saved.

One of the things that SERVPRO really focused on in this warehouse was the cleaning. Soot coated the ceilings in the warehouse. In this picture, we are seen cleaning all of the soot from the ceilings. Fortunately, the warehouse was able to stay open for hours of operation after the fire.

Does Your Allen County Home Have A Mold Problem?

5/1/2017 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
